About the Apprenticeship
Sandown Motor Holdings (SMH), a subsidiary of Daimler Truck Southern Africa Ltd, is building a talent pipeline for aspiring Diesel Mechanics who are passionate about commercial vehicles and want to qualify as Diesel Technicians.
This apprenticeship opportunity is based at the Centurion Sandown Workshop and provides structured, hands-on training under the supervision of a qualified Technician. Successful candidates will gain practical exposure to servicing and repairing commercial vehicles according to Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA) standards.

Job Overview
The Diesel Mechanic Apprentice will assist qualified technicians with maintenance, repairs, and servicing of commercial vehicles while complying with DTSA quality, safety, and warranty standards. The role combines practical workshop experience with formal apprenticeship training aligned with Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MERSETA) requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance Support
• Ensure all work is authorized before commencing repairs
• Meet DTSA prescribed flat-rate times for services and repairs
• Carry out repairs according to job cards
• Seek supervisory advice where required
• Apply technical skills productively and efficiently
Customer Service Excellence
• Take utmost care of customer vehicles and property
• Maintain high customer care standards at all times
• Inform the Foreman and Service Advisor of delays or potential issues
• Use seat covers and protective materials during servicing
• Apply quality workmanship according to DTSA standards
• Secure replaced parts for customer inspection when required
Administration and Cost Control
• Complete job cards accurately and promptly
• Conduct fault finding and report findings
• Record hours worked and materials used accurately
• Attach picking slips to job cards
• Adhere to warranty and fleet maintenance standards
• Submit completed job cards with all supporting documentation
• Minimize wastage of oils, fluids, and materials
Housekeeping, Safety & Compliance
• Use tools and equipment according to DTSA repair instructions
• Maintain and secure apprentice hand tools
• Keep the workshop bay clean and organized
• Comply with all SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) and statutory requirements
• Adhere to all company policies and procedures
Self-Development
• Take responsibility for personal learning and development
• Comply with apprenticeship agreements with MERSETA
• Submit all assessment portfolios on time
• Participate in on-the-job and off-the-job training
Minimum Qualifications
• Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science, and English
OR
• Technical Matric
OR
• N2 in Mechanical Engineering
OR
• N2 Diesel / Motor Mechanic
