Job Purpose

The purpose of the General Worker position is to perform cleaning, refuse collection, bin delivery, and street maintenance duties within designated areas of the City of Johannesburg. Duties may include street cleaning, sweeping, stacking, lane flushing, carcass removal, litter picking, and refuse bin deliveries.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Successful candidates will be responsible for the following tasks:

• Street cleaning, sweeping, and litter picking

• Cleaning and handling refuse bins

• Wearing protective clothing (PPE) at all times

• Collecting required tools, materials, and equipment daily

• Clearing spillages caused by refuse bag breakages

• Cleaning streets, pavements, townships, informal settlements, and tourist areas using brooms, shovels, and litter pickers

• Filling refuse bags manually where required and placing them at designated collection points

• Stacking refuse bags correctly with openings facing the road

• Assisting street truck teams during refuse collection

• Observing all safety and operational procedures

• Reporting safety incidents, equipment faults, and injuries to the Team Leader or Operations Supervisor

• Liaising with members of the public and reporting service delivery issues

• Distributing refuse bags to consumers as per service schedules

• Collecting, loading, delivering, and exchanging refuse bins

• Recording refuse bin serial numbers in the bin delivery register

• Ensuring customers sign delivery receipts

• Completing all daily assigned tasks

• Performing additional duties as delegated by the Supervisor

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

• Grade 10 qualification

• Minimum 12 months cleaning or general work experience

• No criminal record

• Must be physically and mentally fit

• Must be a South African citizen

• Must reside within the City of Johannesburg

(Proof of residence or letter confirming address is compulsory)

Required Knowledge and Competencies

• Knowledge of cleaning tools, refuse handling equipment, and procedures

• Understanding of relevant legislation and company policies

• Ability to follow instructions accurately

• Ability to prioritise and execute tasks effectively

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Strong safety awareness and attention to detail
