Job Overview
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for a permanent Artisan Assistant position based at Head Office in Cape Town. The successful candidate will assist with maintenance, repairs, and emergency breakdowns across various trades while supporting artisans in delivering efficient building and facilities services.

Key Responsibilities
• Carry out minor maintenance and repairs on building fixtures and components
• Assist with emergency breakdowns, including after-hours repairs
• Support artisans with planned and preventative maintenance tasks
• Assist with requisitioning and control of materials and spare parts
• Ensure tools and materials are prepared before commencing work
• Clean work areas after maintenance and repair tasks
• Assist the Artisan Cadre with their respective duties when required
• Provide in-service training to Tradesmen Aids and Interns
• Perform standby duties and overtime when required
Minimum Requirements
• Grade 10 or equivalent qualification
• Valid driver’s licence (Code B/EB – Manual)
• Willingness to travel across the Western Cape
• Physically fit to perform maintenance duties
• Willing to work overtime, standby, and attend to after-hours emergencies
Experience Requirements
Appropriate experience in maintenance and repairs in one or more of the following trades:
• Carpentry
• Plumbing
• Bricklaying
• Painting
• Electrical
• Mechanical
• Air Conditioning
Skills & Competencies
• Knowledge of the Machinery Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85)
• Ability to fault-find and carry out repairs
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• Strong attention to safety and compliance
• Ability to work under pressure and respond to emergencies
Salary & Benefits
Salary: R193,359 – R227,766 per annum
