We Are Hiring a Qualified Rigger
Sappi Southern Africa is looking for a skilled and safety-focused Rigger to provide specialist rigging services across Tugela Mill. The successful candidate will be responsible for the rigging, inspection, and safe operation of lifting equipment on a daily and shift basis, in line with recognised safe engineering and SHEQ standards.
This role is ideal for a qualified Rigger with experience in heavy engineering environments who can confidently plan, supervise, and execute complex lifting operations.
Key Responsibilities
As a Rigger at Sappi, your responsibilities will include:
• Planning and executing rigging tasks in accordance with safe engineering and quality standards
• Developing and maintaining quality control procedures for all rigging activities
• Liaising with plant engineers, foremen, and production teams on rigging requirements
• Advising customers on safe lifting methods, equipment selection, and compliance
• Engaging with suppliers and external service providers to ensure high-quality lifting equipment and services
• Attending technical meetings and responding to rigging-related enquiries across the mill
• Supervising, instructing, and controlling rigging teams and contractors within assigned work areas
• Operating mobile cranes and machinery when required or in the absence of crane operators
• Conducting statutory inspections of lifting equipment, completing registers, and declaring equipment fit or unfit for use
• Performing specialised rigging tasks, including calculating safe lifting angles, radii, and load capacities
• Inspecting lifting equipment, machinery, and ensuring correct colour coding
• Ensuring compliance with SHEQ requirements and participating in incident investigations
• Identifying root causes of non-conformances and implementing corrective actions
• Maintaining excellent housekeeping standards at all times
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
To be considered, you must meet the following criteria:
• Matric and N2 Engineering qualification
• N3 qualification will be an advantage
• Rigging Trade Test Certificate (essential)
• Minimum of 2 years post-apprenticeship experience in a heavy engineering environment
• Proven rigging experience, preferably in paper machine roll removal and installation
• Strong knowledge of lifting regulations, safety standards, and inspection procedures
