About the Opportunity
Universal Paper and Plastics (Pty) Ltd is offering an exciting Apprentice Fitter and Turner Learnership opportunity at our Ga-Rankuwa plant. This position is ideal for motivated individuals who are eager to start a career in mechanical maintenance and production engineering.
As an apprentice, you will learn to maintain, repair, and service various production machines and equipment used in our Roll, Serviette, and Ink factories. The goal is to ensure smooth operations, reduce downtime, and extend the lifespan of our machinery.
Key Responsibilities
As part of your apprenticeship, you will:
• Perform maintenance on machinery, equipment, and building systems to ensure maximum uptime.
• Assist qualified artisans with mechanical repairs, overhauls, and shutdown maintenance.
• Participate in identifying and executing corrective actions for mechanical breakdowns.
• Support preventative maintenance programs on production equipment.
• Assist with machine part changeovers (e.g. embossers, folding cylinders, and rollers).
• Learn how to strip, repair, and replace centrifugal pumps, gearboxes, and multi-stage pumps.
• Participate in motor fitting, belt alignment, and other general mechanical tasks.
• Help develop inventory lists and ensure spare parts are readily available.
• Be involved in new equipment projects and improvement initiatives.
• Maintain high-quality workmanship standards to prevent rework or unnecessary downtime.
• Follow safety and quality protocols as part of the company’s ISO management systems.
Supervision and Training
This is a supervised learnership role.
• Apprentices must work under the direct supervision of a qualified artisan.
• Apprentices are not permitted to sign off on safety or work permits.
• You will receive both practical and theoretical training to help you progress toward a trade qualification in Fitting and Turning.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify, applicants must have:
• A minimum N2 certificate in trade theory (Fitting and Turning).
• Basic understanding of Health and Safety protocols.
• Workshop or institutional training in mechanical or technical disciplines.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Willingness to work after hours or perform standby duties when required.

What You’ll Gain
