As part of the Traxx Africa project in Boksburg, Alstom Rolling Stock South Africa (Pty) Ltd seeks a qualified Artisan Welder to join our high-performance team.
Role Purpose
To fabricate and repair steel components, sub-assemblies, and carbody shells according to engineering drawings, work procedures, and quality standards using appropriate welding techniques.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform CO₂ (GMAW) welding on locomotive components following approved procedures
• Conduct self-inspection of work before progressing to the next station
• Maintain a clean and organized work area in line with 5S/Housekeeping standards
• Operate hand and power tools efficiently and safely
• Prepare and set up necessary tools and equipment for welding operations
• Identify and repair welding defects (including gouging)
• Perform first-level equipment maintenance
• Propose and support continuous improvement and cost-saving initiatives
• Identify and report secondary damage or fabrication issues
• Support ad hoc production tasks as required
• Mentor apprentices and semi-skilled workers to ensure safety and quality
• Adhere to all safety standards, policies, and OSHACT guidelines
Minimum Requirements
• Grade 12 / N3 Certificate
• Trade Certificate in Welding
• 3–5 years’ welding and fabrication experience (GMAW/CO₂ essential)
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHACT)
