The role also involves supporting preventative maintenance activities to help identify visible signs of wear, damage, leaks, or other equipment problems before they develop into more serious failures. By assisting with routine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and general maintenance preparation, the Fitter Assistant will contribute to equipment reliability and the efficient operation of the facilities.
The candidate must understand the importance of workplace safety, teamwork, accurate reporting, and compliance with company procedures. All technical activities must be performed within the candidate’s level of competence and under the appropriate supervision of qualified personnel.
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting qualified Fitters and artisans with a variety of mechanical maintenance and facilities support activities, including the following:

- Assisting with the assembly and disassembly of mechanical components while following the instructions of the responsible Fitter.
- Helping prepare machinery and equipment for servicing, inspection, repairs, and scheduled maintenance work.
- Supporting routine equipment inspections by checking for visible damage, loose components, abnormal noise, leaks, corrosion, and signs of wear.
- Reporting any observed equipment defects, unsafe conditions, or unusual operating conditions to the responsible artisan or supervisor.
- Assisting with basic troubleshooting activities under supervision and helping identify possible causes of mechanical problems.
- Ensuring that hand tools and basic power tools are handled correctly, cleaned after use, and stored safely in their designated locations.
- Maintaining good housekeeping standards in workshops, plant rooms, maintenance areas, and other assigned workspaces.
- Assisting with the collection and organisation of maintenance materials, spare parts, and equipment required for specific jobs.
- Supporting stock control activities by identifying shortages of consumables, tools, and spare parts and reporting them to the relevant personnel.
- Assisting artisans during equipment breakdowns, maintenance shutdowns, repair projects, installations, and equipment upgrades.
- Supporting the completion of maintenance work orders, job cards, inspection records, and other relevant documentation as instructed.
- Recording basic maintenance information accurately and ensuring that completed tasks are reported to the responsible supervisor.
- Following instructions when assisting with equipment isolation, lockout procedures, and other safety controls implemented by authorised personnel.
