This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who enjoys working with people, takes pride in delivering exceptional customer service, and would like to build valuable experience in the retail industry. As a Till Operator / Customer Assistant, you will play an important role in creating a welcoming and professional shopping environment while ensuring that customers receive efficient, accurate, and helpful service.

The successful candidate will be responsible for operating the till efficiently, processing customer transactions, handling payments accurately, assisting customers with queries, promoting loyalty programmes and available store services, and maintaining high standards of presentation and cleanliness. You will also be expected to remain knowledgeable about Woolworths products, promotions, and special events so that you can provide customers with relevant and useful information.

Woolworths values professionalism, integrity, teamwork, customer satisfaction, and continuous personal development. This role provides an opportunity to become part of a dynamic retail team where your contribution can make a direct difference to the customer experience.

Key Responsibilities

As a Till Operator / Customer Assistant, your responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Delivering exceptional customer service by welcoming customers warmly and creating a positive and professional shopping experience.
  • Operating the till accurately and efficiently while following all prescribed till procedures, company policies, and cash-handling requirements.
  • Processing cash, card, and other approved payment methods correctly and ensuring that all transactions are completed accurately.
  • Checking scanned prices against ticketed or displayed prices and assisting with price-related queries in a professional manner.
  • Assisting customers with general enquiries and directing them to the appropriate department or colleague when additional assistance is required.
  • Promoting Woolworths loyalty programmes and encouraging eligible customers to make use of available benefits.
  • Informing customers about additional services offered in-store, such as bill payments, airtime top-ups, and other applicable services.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Woolworths products, product ranges, promotions, seasonal campaigns, and special events.
  • Supporting sales initiatives by identifying opportunities to recommend relevant products or services to customers.
  • Keeping the till point clean, organised, hygienic, and presentable in accordance with Woolworths standards.
  • Following all health, safety, security, hygiene, and store presentation requirements.
  • Taking appropriate steps to minimise shrinkage, losses, fraud, and dishonest activity by following company security procedures.
  • Reporting suspected fraud, dishonesty, incorrect transactions, security concerns, or other irregularities to the appropriate supervisor or manager.
  • Maintaining a high level of honesty, integrity, and accountability when handling cash and customer transactions.
  • Remaining calm, polite, and professional when dealing with difficult situations, customer complaints, long queues, or busy trading periods.
  • Communicating clearly and respectfully with customers, supervisors, managers, and fellow team members.
  • Supporting colleagues when required and contributing positively to a cooperative and productive team environment.
  • Maintaining punctuality, good attendance, personal discipline, and compliance with the required dress code and grooming standards.
  • Being flexible and available to work different shifts, including weekends and other operational periods as required by the store.
  • Completing all assigned duties in accordance with Woolworths procedures and operational standards.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification at the appropriate NQF level.
  • Previous retail, cashier, till operator, sales, hospitality, or customer service experience will be advantageous, although relevant experience may not be essential.
  • A genuine interest in working with customers and providing high-quality service.
  • Basic selling skills and the ability to identify opportunities to promote products, promotions, loyalty programmes, and available services.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with customers and colleagues.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills, with the ability to accurately process transactions and handle monetary values.
  • Strong attention to detail when scanning products, checking prices, processing payments, and completing till-related procedures.
  • Good product awareness and a willingness to learn about Woolworths products, services, promotions, and store initiatives.
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced retail environment, particularly during busy trading periods.
  • The ability to remain calm and professional when working under pressure.
  • Flexibility to work different shifts according to store operational requirements.
  • Strong personal discipline, including punctuality, reliability, appropriate personal presentation, and adherence to company policies.
  • A high level of honesty and integrity, particularly when handling cash and customer transactions.
  • The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a team.
  • A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to providing an excellent customer experience.

Skills and Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate should be approachable, energetic, dependable, and willing to go the extra mile for customers. Strong interpersonal skills are important because the role involves regular interaction with customers from different backgrounds and with different needs.

You should be comfortable standing and working for extended periods and should be able to maintain concentration while processing multiple transactions. Accuracy is particularly important because till operators are responsible for handling payments, checking prices, issuing receipts, and following procedures designed to protect both customers and the business.

The successful candidate should also demonstrate patience and emotional maturity. Retail environments can become extremely busy, especially during weekends, holidays, promotional events, and peak shopping periods. You should therefore be able to manage pressure without compromising customer service or accuracy.

Customer Service Expectations

At Woolworths, the customer experience is an important part of the role. You will be expected to greet customers professionally, listen to their needs, respond to questions, and provide assistance wherever possible.

Where appropriate, you should acknowledge loyalty card holders by name and create a welcoming environment that encourages customers to return. You will also be expected to explain available services and promotions clearly without being overly forceful.

Every interaction should reflect professionalism, respect, courtesy, and a genuine willingness to assist.

Working Environment

This is a full-time retail position based at Woolworths Somerset West CBD. The successful candidate must be prepared to work according to the store’s roster and operational requirements.

Retail trading often requires flexibility, meaning employees may be required to work different shifts, weekends, public holidays, and during busy seasonal periods. Candidates should therefore be comfortable with a flexible work schedule.

You will work as part of a team and will be expected to cooperate with colleagues, supervisors, and management to ensure that the store operates efficiently and that customers receive consistent service.

Why Join Woolworths?
