The Dayshift Fitter Assistant will provide support to qualified Fitters and Mechanical Supervisors by assisting with mechanical maintenance, equipment repairs, installations, housekeeping, and shutdown activities. The role plays an important part in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of equipment within the zinc mining operation.

Job Purpose
The successful candidates will assist with daily mechanical maintenance tasks while working under the supervision of experienced artisans and supervisors. This role offers valuable practical exposure to mining plant operations and provides an excellent opportunity for skills development and future trade advancement.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Health and Compliance
Follow Mine Health and Safety regulations and safe work procedures
Adhere to lock-out/tag-out and permit-to-work procedures
Wear prescribed PPE at all times
Identify and report unsafe working conditions and hazards
Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and safety meetings
Mechanical Maintenance Support
Assist qualified fitters with:
Planned and preventative maintenance
Breakdown repairs and maintenance support
Installation and replacement of mechanical components
Cleaning, stripping, inspection, and reassembly of equipment
Support maintenance work on:
Conveyors, rollers, idlers, and belt systems
Pumps, gearboxes, bearings, seals, and couplings
Chutes, wear plates, structural components, and guards
Tools, Materials and Logistics
Prepare and transport tools and materials to work areas
Assist with handling and positioning of mechanical components
Clean and store tools and equipment correctly after use
Housekeeping and Plant Standards
Maintain clean and safe working areas
Assist with cleaning plant equipment, walkways, and platforms
Help prevent oil leaks, spills, and trip hazards
Shutdown and Operational Support
Assist during breakdowns and urgent maintenance tasks
Support planned shutdowns and maintenance campaigns
Carry out duties according to production and maintenance schedules
Skills Development
Gain practical mechanical experience under supervision
Attend safety training and development programmes
Develop mechanical skills for future artisan or trade opportunities
Administration and Reporting
Assist with job cards and maintenance records
Report equipment defects and incomplete work to supervisors
Support basic spares identification and material handling tasks
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Grade 10 to Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
Basic understanding of workplace safety procedures
Ability to follow instructions and work effectively within a team
Must be medically fit for mining work
Advantageous Qualifications and Experience

Mechanical assistant or pre-apprenticeship training
Basic hand-tool experience
Exposure to mining, industrial, or plant environments
