Position Overview
VKB Engineering Services is currently recruiting two (2) Artisan Assistants to join its maintenance team based in Douglas, Northern Cape. This role is ideally suited for individuals who are technically inclined, hands-on, and eager to gain practical experience in mechanical and electrical maintenance within an industrial agricultural setting.
The Artisan Assistant will provide direct support to a qualified Fitter and maintenance team, assisting with preventative maintenance, breakdown repairs, installations, inspections, and fabrication work across multiple GWK silo facilities.
This role requires a strong work ethic, the ability to operate in physically demanding environments, and a willingness to travel regularly between sites. It is an excellent opportunity for candidates looking to develop technical skills in fitting, welding, fabrication, and maintenance engineering.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist artisans and Fitters with mechanical maintenance, repairs, and installations
- Support the execution of preventative maintenance schedules on silo systems and related infrastructure
- Perform basic electrical maintenance tasks using appropriate tools and equipment
- Assist in welding, grinding, cutting, and fabrication activities under supervision
- Help assemble, fit, and align mechanical components and structural elements
- Conduct routine inspections of machinery, chutes, valves, conveyors, and silo equipment
- Assist in diagnosing faults and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues
- Maintain and clean electrical systems, cables, and equipment as part of daily maintenance
- Ensure strict compliance with occupational health and safety regulations
- Work closely with maintenance teams during breakdowns, repairs, and emergency interventions
- Travel to various GWK silo sites to provide on-site technical support and maintenance assistance
- Maintain a clean, organised, and hazard-free working environment at all times
- Accurately follow instructions, work orders, and maintenance checklists
- Participate in skills development and on-the-job training programmes
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification
- Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems
- Demonstrated ability to use hand tools and maintenance equipment (grinders, drills, spanners, etc.)
- Basic troubleshooting and fault-finding skills
- Physically fit and capable of working in demanding industrial environments
- Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces
- Strong awareness of workplace safety standards and procedures
- Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision
- Willingness to learn, grow, and develop technical skills
Advantageous Qualifications and Experience
- Valid South African driver’s licence
- Trade certificate (Fitting, Welding, Boilermaking, or related field)
- Previous experience in industrial, agricultural, or maintenance environments
- Exposure to silo systems, conveyors, or grain handling equipment
- Basic welding or fabrication experience
