About the Apprenticeship Programme
This 3-year apprenticeship programme provides in-service training toward becoming a qualified Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic. Apprentices will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, ensuring they are job-ready upon completion.
Probation Period
The first 6 months serve as a probation phase. During this time, both the apprentice and AFGRI assess long-term suitability. Either party may withdraw without penalty.
Training Structure & Development
Once probation is successfully completed, apprentices enter into a formal contract and begin structured training, which may include:
- Practical training at accredited institutes
- Distance learning through registered colleges
- Saturday classes (where required)
- Product-specific training from suppliers and AFGRI specialists
- Internal technical workshops and mentoring
Training is facilitated in partnership with AgriSETA or MerSETA, ensuring industry-aligned certification and compliance.
Costs & Commitments
- Training is fully funded if successfully completed
- Failed modules must be repeated at the apprentice’s own cost
- Apprentices sign a 3-year contract, with a maximum duration of 4 years
- A work-back period applies equal to the training duration
- Early withdrawal may result in repayment of training costs
Key Responsibilities
As an apprentice, your duties will include:
- Learning to diagnose, repair, and maintain equipment
- Supporting workshop operations
- Managing stock and parts
- Delivering quality customer service
- Performing general technical and administrative tasks
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this apprenticeship, applicants must have:
- A valid driver’s license
- Grade 12 with:
- English
- Mathematics or Technical Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy)
- Strong communication and administrative skills
- Basic computer literacy
Advantageous subjects include:
- Physical Science or Engineering Science
- Engineering Graphics & Design
- Diesel or Motor Trade Theory
