Artisan Assistant (Mining) Vacancy
A well-established organisation within the mining industry is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Artisan Assistant to join its operations in Mooinooi, North West, on a 12-month contract.
The successful candidate will provide operational and maintenance support to qualified Artisans, including Diesel Mechanics, Boilermakers, Riggers and Fitters. This role is suited to a hands-on and safety-conscious individual with previous mining experience who is looking to further develop their skills within a professional mining environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with maintenance activities, preparing and handling tools and equipment, maintaining housekeeping standards and ensuring that work areas are safe, clean and organised.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- 1 to 2 years’ experience as an Artisan Assistant, General Assistant or in a similar support role within the mining industry.
- Previous experience in an underground or surface mining environment.
- Experience assisting qualified Artisans, including Diesel Mechanics, Boilermakers, Riggers or Fitters.
- Basic knowledge of engineering hand tools, power tools and workshop equipment.
- Good command of English, with the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Medically fit to work on a mine site.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
- Willingness to work shifts, overtime and standby as operationally required.
- Physically fit and capable of performing manual duties in a mining environment.
- Strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Assisting qualified Artisans with daily maintenance, repair and installation activities.
- Supporting Diesel Mechanics, Boilermakers, Riggers and Fitters during maintenance activities.
- Transporting, organising and preparing tools, equipment, materials and spare parts.
- Preparing work areas and required materials before maintenance activities commence.
- Cleaning and maintaining tools, machinery, workshop equipment and designated work areas.
- Assisting with the dismantling, cleaning and reassembly of equipment and mechanical components under the supervision of a qualified Artisan.
- Supporting planned preventative maintenance, breakdown repairs and shutdown maintenance activities.
- Retrieving tools, consumables and replacement parts as required.
- Assisting with the safe lifting, moving and positioning of equipment, materials and components using approved methods and equipment.
- Ensuring tools and equipment are inspected, cleaned and stored correctly after use.
- Maintaining a high standard of housekeeping in workshops and designated work areas.
- Reporting damaged tools, equipment defects and unsafe conditions to the relevant Artisan or Supervisor.
- Assisting with basic maintenance records, inspection checklists and job cards where required.
- Complying with all applicable Mine Health and Safety regulations, company policies and safe work procedures.
- Participating in toolbox talks, risk assessments and safety inspections.
- Reporting hazards, near misses and unsafe conditions promptly.
- Performing any other reasonable duties assigned by the qualified Artisan or Supervisor.
