Position Purpose
Transnet Freight Rail is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Trainee Train Assistants in Klawer. This role involves supporting the Train Driver in safely and efficiently operating various types of trains (airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger), ensuring that freight and cargo are delivered on time, securely, and in good condition — ultimately meeting customer expectations and contributing to Transnet’s service excellence.
Key Responsibilities
• Sign on duty and prepare for shift operations.
• Assist in locomotive preparation, start-up procedures, and brake testing.
• Operate and verify communication equipment (radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, telemeters).
• Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure roadworthiness and safety compliance.
• Perform shunting, attaching/detaching vehicles, and load management as per work orders.
• Support safe and efficient train movement enroute, adhering to operational protocols.
• Maintain safety standards and provide feedback on incidents or deviations.
• Assist with administrative tasks and complete train journals accurately after each shift.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
• Grade 12 (Matric) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Additional Requirements:
• Must be at least 1.6m tall
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to carry heavy objects
• Psychomotor assessment via Vienna Testing System (VTS)
• Be physically and mentally fit (medical assessments apply)
• Must be 21 years or older for operational duties (per SANS 3000 guidelines)
• Willing to undergo Train Assistant training (theory and practical)
• Willing to work shifts, weekends, and holidays
• Comply with safety, health, and behavioural risk assessments (annually)
Functional Training
Candidates must be willing and able to successfully complete all theoretical and practical components of Train Assistant training to earn certification and operate independently in this role.
